How does a Bachelor Completion program differ from a Bachelor’s degree?

A degree completion program is designed for students who were well intentioned to complete a degree, but for whom, “life happened” and were not able to do so. Bachelor completion degrees offer adult learners the ability to have their previous college credit and work experience/training evaluated to determine if credit can be applied toward their degree. When can I start taking classes in the program I selected?

Before you can begin taking classes, you must apply for admission to your program of choice. Depending on when you are admitted, you may begin taking classes during the following sessions Fall (August), Spring (January), or Summer (May) Please speak with your Enrollment Counselor for more information.

Are the online programs the same as the on-campus programs?

Yes. The only difference between our online and on-campus programs is the method of delivery. The curriculum is the same, the coursework is just as rigorous and many of the faculty also teach on campus. The diploma you earn when you complete the online program is the same as on campus.

What is Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota residency requirement?

Residency requirement refers to the number of credits a student must complete at an institution before he or she can receive a degree from that specific institution. For Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota a student must complete at least 36 credits for an online master’s program and at least 62 credits for a bachelor completion degree from Saint Mary’s University. For other programs offered on-campus please refer to your Enrollment Counselor.

Admission

What are the admission requirements?

To be considered for admission to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota online master’s level programs, you must hold an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution and an overall grade-point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale. You must also demonstrate the language proficiency necessary for successful graduate coursework. If your GPA upon admission is below 2.75, you may be admitted with conditional status upon approval of your respective program’s director.

Some applicants may be asked to participate in a virtual interview with a program director, which will be scheduled after you submit your application package.

Your application package must include:

  • A completed application form.
  • Official transcripts in sealed envelopes directly from highest degree bearing institutions and graduate credit granting institutions. We cannot accept transcripts that have been previously scanned, faxed, e-mailed, opened, marked, or damaged in any way. Please contact your credit-granting institutions directly to have your official transcripts sent to Saint Mary’s University. If you are submitting transcripts from countries other than the U.S., please visit the International Student page.
  • A 2-3 page personal statement that includes a brief description of your background, training, and experience; your career goals and reasons for seeking admission to your chosen program; your strengths and areas in which you wish to develop greater abilities; and any other personal information you wish to share. Note: There may be additional admissions requirements specific to your program of interest, speak with your Enrollment Counselor for more information.
  • A current résumé listing your educational background and work experience.
  • Two letters of reference or recommendation that verify your professional and/or volunteer experience and your academic ability. Personal letters of reference will not be accepted. For applicants applying to the Accelerated Master of Business Administration program, you will also be required to submit the following:
  • Official GMAT scores with a total score greater than 500 or proof of 5 years of work experience and a professional writing sample with an in-depth financial analysis approximately 5 pages long.

Who can guide me through the application process if I have questions?

You will be assigned an Enrollment Counselor who will guide you through the entire application process.

Is there a standardized test needed prior to admission?

Generally, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota does not require standardized exams prior to admission, such as the GMAT or GRE. However, International Students may be required to have a current TOEFL exam on file and online accelerated MBA students will be required to submit a GMAT score or provide proof of professional work experience, writing sample and financial analysis. Speak with your Enrollment Counselor for specific admissions requirements for your program.

Does Saint Mary’s University accept applications from all 50 states?

No. Due to the Program Integrity Rules of the U.S. Department of Education and the regulations requiring registration in individual states, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is unable to accept students residing in the states of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania at this time. However, Saint Mary’s University is coordinating with these two states and all marketing will be updated once the status changes.

Transfer

Will my previous coursework transfer to Saint Mary’s University?

For the online masters programs you may apply to transfer a maximum of six semester credit hours with the approval of the Saint Mary’s University Program Director. Your transfer credits are subject to both graduate school and programmatic criteria. Course syllabi and transcripts are needed for transfer credit requests.

Will Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota accept work experience or training for academic credit?

Yes. Saint Mary’s recognizes that many students come to the university with college-level competencies that have been developed outside the traditional college classroom. The following are options to assist in completing a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process:

  • Business and industry training
  • Military education (ACE)
  • Standardized examinations (CLEP and DSST)
  • International credits evaluated course-by-course from ECE or WES

During the enrollment process, prospective students will discuss these options and processes with their Enrollment Counselor.

Tuition

Who does the tuition grant apply to within the Federal Government?

The Federal Alliance tuition grant benefits apply to Federal Government employees, their spouses and dependents who are accepted and enroll into Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. These students will receive a waiver of the application fee that is normally $25 and a tuition grant in the amount equal to 10% of the tuition costs as of the date of enrollment. Federal Government employees are civil service employees only and do not include active duty service members or contractors. Spouses are defined as those who are in domestic partnership with Federal Government employees. Dependents are defined by using the US Tax code definition as it applies to “health benefits” which covers dependent children until age 26. Are non-government/contractor employees eligible for the savings?

No.

What type of identification materials will those who apply need to provide to be eligible for the tuition grant?

For verification Saint Mary’s University asks that Federal Government employees submit a copy of their most recent LES (Leave and Earning Statement) to verify current employment. Their spouse and dependents will also need to submit the most recent LES of their sponsor, with a letter from the Federal Government employee verifying their relationship status. The letter verifying status does not require a wet signature; therefore it can be mailed or emailed to the Enrollment Counselor. The definition of dependents is defined by Saint Mary’s University, who uses the US Tax code definition as it applies to “health benefits” which covers dependent children until age 26. What is the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, and do I qualify?

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program is intended to encourage individuals to enter and continue to work full-time in public service jobs. Under this program, borrowers may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance of their Direct Loans after they have made 120 qualifying payments on those loans while employed full-time by certain public service employers.

Where is Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota located?

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs is located at the Twin Cities campus in Minneapolis. All other Saint Mary’s University campus-based programs are all taught in Minnesota in Winona, Apple Valley, Oakdale and Rochester. Online Program Format

As an online student, do I have to go to the physical campus in Minnesota?

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota students completing online degrees complete all courses online and are not required to attend a ground campus.

Are classes held on certain days or at certain times online?

No. Online programs are entirely asynchronous; there are no requirements to meet with classmates or professors virtually during any set days or times. As an adult learner you are able to set your own schedule to study and do assignments in order to meet assignment and activity deadlines in class.

Do online classes take a lot of time?

The rigor and study required of online classes take just as much effort as on-campus classes. Although how much time you spend on your studies will depend on you, the general guidance is to plan on spending approximately 5 hours of study time outside of class for every 1 hour of course credit, therefore a 3 credit hour course will take you at approximately 15 hours a week of study time.

How long are Saint Mary’s University classes?

Class terms are 8 weeks in length. There are 3 starts a year in Fall, Spring, and Summer.

Are the online degree programs self-paced?

No. Online courses are instructor led courses. While there are no set class times, there are assignments and activities with set deadlines each week.

How long does it take to complete an online degree from Saint Mary’s University?

Online programs vary in length and can be affected by the student’s schedule. Therefore, online degree programs range from 12 months – 31 months for completion.

What if I need help or support during the program?

Supporting our online students is a top priority, which is why Saint Mary’s University has implemented several ways for you to get the help you need, when you need it. Your Enrollment Counselor will guide you step-by-step through the admissions and enrollment process, helping you chart your course and select your classes. During the program, you may contact the Personal Support Center anytime, day or night for technical support for computer issues. Your dedicated Student Services Counselor will be on hand to provide guidance; he or she will regularly reach out to you to make sure you’re getting the help and support you need. We at Saint Mary’s University also pride ourselves on the responsiveness of our faculty members, who answer questions promptly and make themselves available for class-related online meetings and discussions.

Will I need to purchase another computer to pursue an online degree at Saint Mary’s University or will my current computer work?

Is an iPad required to pursue this degree?

No. However, all online degree program students are shipped an iPad® device preloaded with the mobile operating system, Saint Mary’s learning platform and productivity apps.

The Wi-Fi enabled iPad interface is very intuitive, however, training will be provided during new student orientation prior to students starting class. This tool is provided to students for the duration of their education with Saint Mary’s University so that he or she can easily access online learning.

I already own an iPad, do I have to use the Saint Mary’s University iPad?

No. You are welcome to use your own iPad for your coursework. Saint Mary’s provides the iPad as a Wi-Fi enabled learning aid to assist you with your studies. Please discuss with your Enrollment Counselor if you have further questions.

Are there additional costs involved with using the Saint Mary’s iPad?

All online students enrolled in the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs are provided with an iPad to use through the duration of their online program at Saint Mary’s University. Students are expected to have reliable internet access through Wi-Fi so that he or she can stay connected to their course; cellular service is not covered by Saint Mary’s University. Free Wi-Fi is available at Saint Mary’s campus locations as well as many public businesses. Some Saint Mary’s University online courses may require students to pay for an app that he or she will be using on the iPad. If an app is required, it will be listed on the course syllabus, so that students will be prepared to purchase the app along with other course materials required for a course. If students are not actively enrolled for more than two consecutive terms, by the third term he or she will be charged a monthly iPad lease fee of $35 a month until they become actively enrolled into courses or withdraw and return the iPad and accessories back to the university.

Can a student purchase the iPad at the end of their program?

No. The student must return their Saint Mary’s University provided iPad and accessories at the end of their educational program. If a student does not return the iPad and accessories, he or she will be charged $670, the full replacement cost. However, if a student would like to purchase a personal iPad using their personal funds, he or she is welcome to use their Saint Mary’s University email address to get an educational discount from the Apple Store.

Does my agency need to sign a separate contract with Saint Mary’s for my employees to receive the tuition grant?

No. Saint Mary’s University has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) as part of the Federal Education Alliance with the Office of Personnel Management. This MOA provides all Federal Government employees, their spouses and dependents who enroll with Saint Mary’s University a waived application fee that is normally $25 and a 10% tuition grant on programs offered through the Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs. The Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Federal Alliance covers education provided through the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs. In the state of Minnesota and on campus the following are provided: Bachelor completion programs, Undergraduate certificates, Master’s programs, Graduate certificates, Professional development programs for educators, Specialist programs and Doctoral degrees. Fully online programs that are provided include: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, M.A. in Educational Leadership, M.A. in Health and Human Services Administration, M.A. in Human Resource Management, M.A. in International Development, M.A. in Organizational Leadership, M.A. in Special Education, M.Ed. in Learning Design and Technology, M.S. in Accountancy, M.S in Project Management and a Master of Business Administration. Therefore, all programs listed under the Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Schools of Graduate and Professional programs are included in the alliance.

Will Saint Mary’s University customize a landing page specifically for my agency?

Yes. Saint Mary’s will create a separate landing page for your agency employees, similar to the main landing page, FedGovATSaintMarys.com. Please contact the Manager of Corporate Education, Angela Opie, at 844.559.4810 or aopie@smumn.edu to discuss details on how you may need the page customized.

The Manager of Corporate Education will meet with you to understand your workforce needs and tailor a solution from Saint Mary’s University course offerings.

As the Training Officer, how do I know if my employees are taking advantage of the educational alliance with Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota?

Request an enrollment report by contacting your Manager of Corporate Education, Angela Opie at 844.559.4810 or aopie@smumn.edu. Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota can provide a report specific to your agency following each term in the Fall, Spring, and Summer. The report will include the total number of employees who requested information from Saint Mary’s University, the number of employees enrolled, the number completing courses and programs, the top programs employees are pursuing, and the monthly traffic on the landing page. Please inform the Manager of Corporate Education if you need additional reporting.

Where is the marketing toolkit located?

The Saint Mary’s Marketing Toolkit is located on the Training Officer tab at FedGovATSaintMarys.com. The Toolkit includes marketing flyers, emails, webinars, and FAQs regarding the Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Federal Alliance.
